Hurricane Alex - First Named Storm of 2016?
Only two other hurricanes have appeared in January since forecasters began keeping records in 1851.
Hurricane Alice formed December 31, 1954 and continued as a hurricane until January 4, 1955. Alice remained a hurricane for a total 5 days, only 1 day was in 1954 with 4 days occurring in 1955. Although 80% of Alice's hurricane lifespan occurred in 1955, it was officially put on the 1954 season list and left off of the 1955 list.
Now we come to Hurricane Alex that formed on January 14, 2016. The formation date is only 15 days later than Alice, and only 1.5 months after the ending of the 2015 season and a full 4.5 months prior to the beginning of the 2016 season. But the National Hurricane Center has determined this is the first named storm of the 2016 season.
Weather does not follow the Gregorian calendar, but instead the climatological calendar. So would it make more sense to add Hurricane Alice to the 2015 season instead of the 2016 season?
